Looking for a Thanksgiving hostess gift or a unique and locally made present for the Holidays? Look no further than Cannon By the Sea...

Can you tell us how your company, Cannon By the Sea, came to be?

I fell in love with the art of creating when I was in high school. But life took me in a different direction. Until we had children, and I finally decided it was time to find my true passion. After our first baby was born, I left the corporate world in search of my true calling. Two years later, I was working in real estate and found myself buying personalized gifts for my clients. One day, I finally asked Sean if that was something we could do. I was creative and a quick learner; he was handy and a skilled hobby woodworker. It seemed possible. And after researching and diving deep into the world of laser engraving, we solidified our answer. “Yes!”

How did you learn the art of engraving?

Honestly, a lot of trial and error, SO MUCH test material and countless hours spent dialing in settings, finding and learning from a national community of incredibly talented and driven engravers, and YouTube. Sean and I are self-taught, and always learning something new. We never stop learning. That goes for every single machine we add to our shop.

What types of products do you sell? And what's your best seller?

Much of our work is custom to meet individual customer’s needs. We specialize in handcrafted cutting and charcuterie boards made from locally sourced hardwood slabs, etched glass (wine glasses, champagne flutes, champagne bottles, etc.), tumblers, wood and acrylic signs, personalized ornaments, cake toppers, coasters, and more. We have a Wedding Collection and a Real Estate Collection, as well as a thoughtfully designed Holiday Collection. And we are always adding new products. Our best seller is our handcrafted black walnut cutting boards. We handpick each slab we use, and Sean works his magic to make beautiful boards.

We know you'll be at the Thanksgiving Pop Up on Sunday, November 24, at Christina's in Pembroke. What are some of the hostess and/or holiday gifts you'll have for sale at the Pop Up?

We partnered with several local small businesses to create a gourmet hot cocoa and marshmallow gift set, olive wood Tuscan dipping sets, and a Santa board paired with a cookie decorating kit – great for the kids. We will also have a variety of handcrafted cutting boards, slate signs, coasters, and ornaments.

What's the best thing you purchased yourself from the Pembroke Farmers Market this season?

My kids would say the homemade lemon sorbet from Christina’s! I loved all the fresh produce we bought from the local farms.

What do you value most about living on the South Shore?

There are so many incredible small businesses here on the South Shore, and we are so blessed to be among them. It is a wonderful community of people who are kind, passionate, and doing so much good. We are a firefighter family and the fire family here is incredible, too. Plus, our proximity to the ocean. The sea runs deep in our veins – hence, our name Cannon By the Sea.
