Tell us about how The Bloom Bar came to be?
In 2016, my husband & I had just purchased our first home in Pembroke, which was practically a botanical garden, and I saw stars! Gardening was new to me, I had all these plants to maintain, googled everything (still do) and taught myself along the way. Every summer, I had more flowers than I knew what to do with so I decided to share the wealth! I began cutting and putting flowers on the street for free, which ultimately led to selling jars & bouquets on my roadside cart. I began marketing with business cards (just my phone number written on old paint chips at the time) attached to my bouquets and eventually on social media.
My flowers have been in several local stores, businesses & farmers markets over the years. I do customs orders for all occasions, such as birthdays (local delivery with a hand drawn card!), as well as DIY bloom bars, & events. I’ve met some really cool people along the way. Recently, my husband, son & I, moved back into my childhood home to start a flower farm & we've been growing many more varieties from seed this year! A learning curve for sure, but growing brings hope for the future...excited for my first dahlias!
What makes your flower arrangements unique?
While in the creative process, I try to envision something I’d want to receive myself, while keeping the recipient, occasion or special requests in mind. Growing up in an old farmhouse, I developed an appreciation for vintage & I began collecting antiques over the years; vintage vases, bottles, mason jars…who doesn’t love an ol’ blue bottle with fresh cut flowers! I use them for my arrangements whenever I can. I also tend to give my bouquets a bit of a “rustic twist” or “country vibe”, as if they were cut straight from a meadow, by using natural elements & accents from my yard, such as a swirly vine of English Ivy, wildflowers & gorgeous focal blooms!

What's the hardest part about running your own business? And the most rewarding?
Gardening is a lot like gambling! Spending countless hours in the garden, just to watch your plants die isn’t easy. There are so many variables out of your control when it comes to gardening, such as pests, disease, and weather. I’ve learned a LOT in the process, so now I’m trying to have fun with it. Managing perishable inventory is also a big challenge. Flowers have a limited lifespan, so I must carefully balance how many stems to cut in order to meet customer demand without overstocking and incurring waste from unsold blooms. With that said, the most rewarding thing is seeing the blooms come to fruition & making people smile with them :)
What do you love most about living in Pembroke / the South Shore?
Growing up in Pembroke, I just adore the "small town” feel, and the sense of community is stronger than ever! Living on the South Shore is so convenient, with easy access to the city, the mountains or the beach. I also love the coastal towns, for the hydrangeas, of course!
What can local consumers expect from you this season at the Pembroke Farmers Market?
A variety of annuals & perennials, such as, hydrangea, peony, rose, dahlias,
sunflowers, zinnia, strawflower & misc, wildflowers to name a few! I will be offering hand-tied bouquets, vase arrangements, and by the stem with a DIY bloom bar. Come make your own bouquet! On top of all that, I’ll be trying out burlap wrapped bouquets for the first time this summer & pumpkin bouquets come fall!

What's your favorite flower?
That’s a tough question for me as I love ALL flowers, but if I absolutely had to choose, it would be hydrangeas! A classic, simple flower, but so vibrant! They look lovely in a vase alone, and the colors are extraordinary! It’s so cool to see how they change throughout the season, too.
If you had to pick one vendor to buy from at the market, who and what would it be?
How can I pick one!? There are so many great vendors to shop from. For gifts, Wax Garden, she has the most beautiful candles I’ve ever seen! And Cushing Farm for fresh, local produce.
